Ray Harryhausen's Birthday!

This year Ray Harryhausen will celebrate his 90th birthday and I'm hoping we can do something really special! When I learned that Ray would be turning 90 this year, I made a suggestion on StopMotionAnimation.com that maybe we should celebrate by shooting stop motion video birthday cards for him. Our friend Nick Hilligoss was already in the middle of shooting a short with that same theme for Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine Online and I'm already working on 'Sinbad The 5th Voyage' but, I still felt that wasn't quite enough.

After I made that suggestion, a lot of animators agreed that the idea had merit and we really should go for it. I blathered on about the idea for a while hoping that it would become something worth collecting on a disk and shipping it to Ray himself. Well as it turns out, it got a lot more attention than that, the idea has ballooned and I'm happy to report that AnimateClay.com and Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine Online have both taken up the concept and expanded it into something that amounts to a REAL TRIBUTE!

Plans are still being hashed out but, Ray's business partner has now officially given his blessing to this and Ray will indeed see whatever we turn out AND there are plans being hatched for this to be something that can truly be called an 'event'.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been contacting as many stop motion animators that I have email addresses for and asking for their participation in this tribute and I'm happy to say that there have been a good number of those who have signed on to shooting a 'card' for Ray's birthday. I will be shooting my own short for this and I hope you will too!

So if you have the time, Please consider shooting something? There really are no strict rules for this other than the following... it needs to be shot in either puppet or clay animation and it must be 'family friendly'. (no gore or otherwise offensive content) Other than that, it can be as long or short, simple or complex as you can afford the time to do... it just needs to honor the life and career of Ray Harryhausen and/or wish him a Happy Birthday!

Further details about how this will be collected and shown are developing currently and I will post future updates as they unfold. But I want to get the word out to as many stop motion animators as possible as soon as possible. Ray's birthday is coming up on June 29th and I suspect that anyone who intends to shoot a 'card' for this event would need to plan to have it finished at least a month in advance of that date.

Ray Harryhausen is in my opinion, THE KING of stop motion animation and more than deserves his 90th birthday to be a massive showing of THANKS for all the years of entertainment and advancements to the craft which he alone mastered for millions of fans.

Sinbad: The 5th Voyage

I've had the distinct honor of being picked as the one who will animate a stop motion animated scene in the film 'Sinbad The 5th Voyage'. As an animator who has seen the work of Ray Harryhausen as nothing less than miraculous for all of my 43 years, I can only hope to make a meager - if not foolish attempt, to fit my tiny feet into those giant shoes.

We stop motion animators refer to him as 'Uncle Ray' for very good reasons... he is family and he will always be larger than us, for all he has taught, inspired and mastered. I will do my best.

'GRAVITY' Online For A Limited Time

I've entered my film 'In the fall of Gravity' into an online animation contest where you can see the whole film until the end of the contest. I NEED YOUR VOTES!

I had a hard time deciding to enter this because I do intend to try to sell the DVD of this film (with extras) and I worry about showing the whole film for free but, I'm willing to take the gamble. In the Fall Of Gavity - The Film

At long last, my film is finished! I have submitted it to and have been accepted into one of the biggest film festivals in New York. The New York International Independent Film & Video Festival (NYIIFVF) They have not provided me with a date on which my film will be shown but, my film is definitely in the line-up.

I have discovered that being a player in the festivals can be an expensive undertaking and I have much to prepare with my very limited means. I need to prepare a 'press kit' and video to represent my film plus print up posters and other printed material that I will have a hard time affording to produce but, I will. The New York edition of the festival (there is an LA edition I will consider) will be happening from September 18th to the 25th 2008, if you can be here, Please come. Clash of the Titans Remake (Appeal) Video

The news of a Clash of the Titans has gone from rumor to reality, and has caused many stop motion enthusiasts to be filled with concern. Will the studio remaking the classic film honor the art form that made it famous, along with all the other Harryhausen films? 'Not likely' is the consensus opinion though it is only speculation. The pick of the director who recently completed the film The Incredible Hulk is a sure sign that the effects will be CGI.

This will surely be an opportunity missed on the part of Legendary Pictures, to take advantage of the tremendous viability and potential of the stop motion techniques of today. What makes the the concept of remaking Titans using CGI so objectionable, is that it is a film which serves as a showcase for the art of stop motion as well as one of the masterpieces of Ray Harryhausen. To replace his work with computer generated effects would serve as nothing less than a slap in the face to both the art and the artist responsible for the original Titans.

Several members of StopMotionAnimation.com (myself included) have done what we can and will continue to attempt to send this message to Legendary Pictures, they hold in their hands the rights to a film classic that is as much a film legend in its' storyline, music and acting as it is a stop motion masterpiece know specifically for the demonstration of that technique and the work of THAT MAN... Mr. Ray Harryhausen.

Paul McConnochie has done us the favor of putting together a short film that will serve as an appeal to Legendary Pictures to see to it that the art form of stop motion animation is the art of choice for this film. This appeal will probably fall upon deaf ears but, I can think of two important reasons for making the plea anyway... One- stranger things have happened, there IS a chance that a plea made loud enough and sincere enough may persuade them to listen and make the effort. And Two- If the only result is that perhaps our plea falls upon the ears and eyes of Ray Harryhausen himself, and lets him know we will never stop appreciating his works and contributions to the world of classic cinema... it will be worth the effort!

A VISIT WITH JOHN DODS

I recently had the pleasure of visiting with SPFX Artist and Stop Motion Legend John Dods. A man who's many years of experience in the world of creature creation has included all aspects of the hand crafted creature production for television, film and the stage.

He has brought his style to all his creations in the forms of prosthetic make-up, live action creature puppets and our beloved Stop Motion Animation. Over the years of his rewarding career his work has taken him in many directions, from supervising the miniature landscape construction of an enormous Ice Crevasse in the Back to the Future Ride for the Universal Studios Theme Park to the prosthetic make up currently being done for Young Frankenstein on Broadway.

I first came to know Mr.Dods from his written articles for Cinemagic Magazine back when he was primarily known for having created the special effects for the low budget sci-fi/horror film The Deadly Spawn and his own privately produced Stop Motion production of a film called Forest Story. I was just a fan and high school student at the time I was reading those articles, with dreams of one day learning to enter the world of stop motion and special effects. For me along with many other effects artists I have met over the years, Johns' name had become a quiet yet unforgettable star amongst those who influenced our budding dreams and careers and his rise to bigger and better projects through his career was inspiring to all who followed his rise to fame. From humble beginnings, he set the example that you can make it, if you work hard enough to reach your goals.

I got to know John personally when I was lucky enough to work for him on numerous episodes of the Laurel Ent. TV Show 'Monsters' as well as a number of other projects that were fun and I learned a lot from his experience and professionalism. Both of our careers seemed to take a similar path, onto bigger and better things but, further away from the one frame at a time art we love so well, Stop Motion.

Several years ago, I felt compelled to return to the art of Stop Motion because, no matter how many years and other types of effects I've done, I never lost the desire - I always felt that everything else I did was just a stepping stone on a path back home to Stop Motion Animation, which was all I ever really wanted to do in the first place.

It seems the road John Dods has been traveling has run a parallel course... on my recent visit with John, we spent hours recounting the years (we had not seen each other in better than a decade) and he remains the same cheerful, charming dreamer I met in the magazines all those years ago. And when he took me on a tour of his new digs and studio, what I saw there was a thrill... he had photos of the characters from his stop motion film Forest Story on a work bench, a collection of ball & socket armatures and a brand new sculpture he's been working on... of a Grog! He has given me permission to show this photo to my fellow Stop Mo Fans along with the disclaimer, that he's not fully up and running with this new Stop Motion project YET but, he is looking forward to the day when he can retire from his other obligations and settle back in to the forest and take each day, one frame at a time.

Well, the second half of the MOLI ROLLER interview is up and I'm VERY pleased with it! Mind you I had no say so in how it was edited and when the interview actually took place, it lasted for roughly and hour and a half so, they had lots of material to play with in editing and I had no clue what area of our conversation would be used in the final cut.

When you go there, for some reason they have the volume on the interviews set to mute as the default setting, look for the volume bar just below the viewing window and drag the bar up to the proper volume.

I pretty happy with the way this first installment came out, but I'm really much happier when the camera is pointed at my puppets, I think they are far more attractive and entertaining than I am. (They didn't talk much during the interview but, they wouldn't shut up after the camera man left!)

Metamorhosis

Many years ago, I worked on a film called Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor, it was a low budget horror film that I worked on for over 2 years doing all the creature designs and was and effects technician throughout the production. This is the first time I finally have the transfer equipment I needed to transfer from my old VHS copy to a digital format so you can see this, it's FAR from the best copy but, it's the best I could do with my setup.

This film involved mostly live action puppets but, near the films' finale there were many shots done in stop motion of the largest creatures in the film due to the fact that there was just no way to get something that large to walk around on its' own on our budget. What resulted was a Harryhausenesque combo of shots that I think worked out rather well.

The large scale puppets and the miniatures were created by the same people so, that resulted in a good blend between the two completely different scales. The large walking creature you will see here (The Spawn) was sculpted by Paul Reilly Jr. and I sculpted the bugged out creature you'll see at the end (Spot 'The Wonder Blob'). I did the painting and finishing work on both puppets. The foam latex castings, armatures and WONDERFUL animation was done by Kent Burton.

In the film, Spot The Wonder Blob grew from a frog sized creature as a mutant until he reached the size the appears as in the end. The original plan was to shoot one of the earlier live action cable controlled puppets in a miniature hallway but, I would have no part of that! There was no budget to build another stop motion puppet so, I volunteered to get it done out of my own pocket. The director (Glenn Takakjian) was happy to take whatever I gave him so the stopmo Spot was born.

This film was shot in the pre-computer era of stop motion so, I hope you'll appreciate the fact that Kent Burton managed to get some stopmo motion blurs into the shots by actually pulling the puppets with monofilament line from off camera while taking long exposures!

I decided to post my portfolio here so I don't need to keep sending people to my Myspace page. What you can see here is that I am certainly no specialist in any one art form, I love the creative process of many types of image creation using a wide variety of materials. Clay, foam, Plastic, wood, paint, rocks and garbage... If I can bend, cut or smear it into an image, there's nothing I won't use as an art material.

When I decided to make this movie, I had a 'little' problem - no camera. I did still have my old trusty Super-8 but didn't feel that was an option for what I wanted the film to look like. And of course there was that other 'little' ingredient I didn't have - money.

I should mention also, at that time I had never even touched a computer or digital camera. I was very intimidated by the whole computer thing, I didn't want to spend the money and time involved at the same time I was trying to reinvent the concept of how to make animation puppets. I also had not animated a puppet in about 18 years and wanted to focus on practicing my animation skills and not spend that same time ripping my hair out trying to learn what a gigglebyte is.

I got the the crazy idea of shooting frames on 35mm print film, when I did the math, it actually seemed like a workable option. After shooting a test shot, I concluded that the 35mm film was indeed an option and thus decided to undertake the challenge.

I shot around four minutes of my film using this method, one of the things I liked about the idea was the ability I had to paint directly onto the photos, giving me the ability to add birds flying in the background, bugs and even blur effects. I did notice a variation in color and contrast from roll to roll of film but, when I would view the photos like a flip-book animation, the variation seemed minimal and something that I would just need to deal with later.

Long story - short, once the computer bug finally got around to biting me, (ok, my wife went out and bought a MAC on the bet that I wouldn't be able to resist any longer!) I then started rephotographing all the stills I had shot up to that point... that's when I discovered what an awful idea the 35mm film really was. The 'minor inconsistencies' in the color and contrast were AWFUL! It seems that when you 'flip book' through the pictures, all that flickering of the edges of the paper photos is enough of a distraction to your eyes, the color changes are made far less noticeable than they really are.

That's when I began learning everything I could about the power of Photoshop! So here's a sample for you to see of the 'flip book' days, tell me if you notice any color changes. And remember kids, don't try this at home...

Just for fun

When on occasion I decide (for sanity's sake) to take a break from the constant focus on my film, I tend to do stuff that ends up helping anyway. Like creating animated avatars, doctoring photos or things like going back to my STAR WARS fan roots and making something like these two tiny movie clips. Both utilize the same shot of a model dropped into different backgrounds.

I know, I know- these shots are far from perfection, I put a grand total of about an hours work into 'em (ok, maybe 5 really). What I learned was that you can save movies with transparent backgrounds and use them as layers in Quicktime Pro and slap them into any image you want later. Nifty!

I will confess to having gotten all exited to see the first new shot of a real T.I.E. fighter in forever, Made me just want to make a whole new SW film. My kid and I did make one up, named the characters and everything (puppets). Life just ain't got enough 'spare' time.

ISOMER

For the design of the the characters, I decided to go with the classic and instantly recognizable images of a Troll and a Wizard. I felt it best, in the case of this short film to not waste time establishing who these characters are, rather the audience should just know by their appearances who's who. My vision of how these character might appear in a feature length film is quite different.

When designing most things such as props, sets and mechanical rigs, I will most often draw sketches, but for characters I prefer clay because the ability to view a character sculpture from different angles is key to understanding their appearance as it will appear in motion.

When designing Trevor, I went directly into puppet construction, sculpting him only once because the image I had for him was quite clear in my mind. The Wizard Isomer was a different story, I knew basically what I wanted his face to look like but, a great deal of his character is represented by his costume. I wanted for it to have a feeling of royalty, not the typical understated robe of a mystic or monk. In the parent script TRUE MAGIC, Isomer is the lone occupant of the Takakjian Fortress which is seen in the short, and so his roll can be seen as not only a wizard but also as a kind of ruler or king.

I sculpted this 10" Sculpey design for Isomer prior to the puppet being constructed. The only change to the design was the cape because I couldn't find a leather or similar looking fabric that would move well enough for animation .

In the script TRUE MAGIC, Isomers' personality is quite different from the gentle and wise part I wrote for him in 'Gravity'. He is a far more mysterious and intimidating character. The Takakjian Fortress was once occupied by a sophisticated and powerful society who ruled all of the known world for more than a thousand years. Then, for reasons unknown, they fell silent. The infrequent comings and goings of this wizard who's name is not know, is now the only living soul within the enormous castle. The plot of TRUE MAGIC is largly centered around the mystery of Isomers' identity and the fear and rumors about him in the Village Jhenn, Trevors' home which lies in the shadow of the Takakjian Fortress.

(Trivia- I picked the name Takakjian for the name of the fortress and its' people when I had writers' block and couldn't make up a name I liked so, I dropped in the last name of my good friend and writer director of the film Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor... Glenn Takakjian. After writing it in to the script numerous times, it stuck and will forever remain. Here's to you Glenn, Cheers!)

Finally, 'Mysterious' Ron Cole has decided to start a blog. Now that I'm in the last phase of shooting my short film, In The Fall Of Gravity.
This film of mine has been years in the making but, not all of those years were devoted to this short film alone. As a matter of fact, There was never supposed to be a short film at all!
It all started when I decided to write a script for an animated feature film entitled
TRUE MAGIC
I've had this dream for too many years of creating a film with a new and different look and style of puppet animation. The first order of business would be to write the script and also create and shoot at least one of these puppets. The idea was to make a miniature puppet that could articulate speech and facial expressions in a manner similar to E.T. and Yoda.
This would require many hours, days, weeks and months to dream up the best methods to use in order to make a relatively tiny puppet face do the sorts of things that (in the past) had only been done on full scale, live action puppets.
How could I possibly ask an executive producer to forward me gobs of money to make a feature film, without demonstrating that I wasn't just 'blowing smoke' with the claim that this could and should be done?

I spent over a year of my 'spare' time (as if there really were such a thing) creating a puppet of the main character from TRUE MAGIC, Trevor Verity. I won't drag you through the hair pulling I endured trying to overcome the technical problems that emerged, I'll just say that I learned the reasons why it had never been done before.

After building a version (after many) of this puppet that actually worked, I shot a one minute clip of 'him' speaking to an invisible (off screen) partner... NOW I really had something! I knew then, that I could build another puppet from scratch that would perform even better than Trevor, his co-star from TRUE MAGIC, Isomer the Wizard.

I could go on about how many times (endless) I found new and better ways to improve upon the mechanics (which always involved a major overhaul of the puppets) and perhaps in future blogs I will go deeper into their evolution, but not now.

At that point, I had two working puppets, so what's the next most logical thing to do? What I had never planned to do - a short...

This is a stitched together view I just did for the fun of it. There are tree major background paintings I did for this shoot, there are a few others as well but these took the most sweat and bother to create. Each one was painted on a 4' x 7' sheet of wood with no effort to make each end match perfectly to the next. I didn't bother to match them end to end because I figured they would never be seen in the same shot so, why knock myself out?
